Engineering aspects of infection control

Date: 9-13 September 2013
Venue: Eastwood Park Training Centre, Falfield

Held over four and a half days, this course explores aspects of infection prevention and control in which engineering criteria are a vital component. It includes consideration of specialist ventilation such as that of operating theatres, thermal (surgical instrument) and chemical (endoscope) washer disinfectors, steam sterilisers, health care laundry and other aspects of hospital hygiene and decontamination. These are supplemented by discussion sessions to put the engineering concepts into the context of practical infection control. The aim of the course is both an understanding of the processes as they relate to infection prevention and the ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with engineers and estates staff.

The training centre is a uniquely equipped, specialist centre for health care engineering training.  The course is a compulsory module for the UCL MSc and Diploma in Healthcare Infection Control, but can also be taken by those not registered for these courses. This course is accredited with 36 RCPath CPD points.  The fee is £1690 (residential) or £1375 (non-residential). For details regarding registration or further information, please email sheila.culkin@hpa.org.uk (after 1 April 2013, please use the address sheila.culkin@phe.gov.uk).
