RCN activity on infection prevention

The RCN undertakes a wide variety of activity on infection prevention issues and practice in order to support improvements in nursing practice and patient outcomes. This includes national, regional and local activity, and ranges from representation at national forums, meetings and stakeholder events to visiting members in their workplaces to understand their challenges and celebrate successes.

This information has been provided in order to give members an awareness of the type of work being undertaken by the RCN in support of infection prevention and control.

Recent consultations on infection prevention and control

In February 2013 we contributed to the following consultation:

Consultation on Interim guidance for the control of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in England.

This consultation was important due to the increase in CPE in health care. Carbapenems are a very important group of antibiotics which in many cases offer a last chance to treat infections caused by multi-resistant bacteria. This rapid spread of multi-resistant bacteria, together with the lack of new therapeutic agents being developed, poses an increasing threat to public health and modern medicine as we know it in the UK.
