The RCN Clinical leadership programme
Excellent clinical leadership is recognised as fundamental to the provision of high quality care and creating a culture of innovation and support in the workplace (RCN 2009). Now more than ever, we need to develop leaders who are able to make the provision of safe quality care a driving force in their organisation’s strategy and operational success. (Burdett Trust for Nursing 2006).
We have recently revised the award winning RCN Clinical Leadership Programme to ensure its continued fitness for purpose in preparing clinical leaders to lead safe quality care in the 21st century.
The RCN Clinical Leadership Programme 2010 aims to work in partnership with organisations to develop cohorts of health and social care practitioners able to meet the challenges identified in NHS Next Stage Review (DH 2008). The programme objectives are to:
- maximise personal effectiveness and style in leadership and managerial role.
- maximise team effectiveness and functioning.
- develop a culture where quality and safety in the delivery of care can flourish.
- develop a deep insight and understanding of the context of health and social care (both locally and nationally) and the implications of this for leaders and managers.
- apply leadership and management capabilities through the development and implementation of a work-based service improvement project.
Who is it for?
The programme is designed for health and social care organisations interested in investing in the development of clinical leaders (practitioners who manage and lead a team Agenda for change bands six and seven or equivalent). This includes practitioners from the public and independent sectors working in any area of health and social care. It is a multidisciplinary programme and open to individuals from all health and social care disciplines.
The programme is delivered using a cascade system. An organisation commissions the CLP (2010) and nominates someone to be the programme facilitator. The facilitator attends the Facilitator Development Programme (FDP) and delivers the CLP with clinical leaders from their organisation.
CLP Programme Outline
The RCN CLP (2010) is a twelve month programme delivered in five modules:
- Preparatory module
- Module one: culture and context
- Module two: Developing self as leader
- Module three: Quality and safety
- Module four: Team working.
The programme includes 11 workshops, seven action learning sets and work-based projects, e-learning activities and incorporates NHS 360-degree feedback. There is a total of 15 days attendance over the 15 month programme.
The programme uses a blended approach to learning to ensure that the participant’s learning is strongly linked to their day to day reality of service delivery. These include experiential learning, work-based learning and e learning methods. The identification and implementation of a service improvement project is a key outcome for programme participants.
How to take part
If you are interested in commissioning the RCN CLP we will be running a Facilitator Development Programme (FDP) on 15 September 2010.
The purpose of the FDP is to equip the facilitator with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively facilitate the CLP within your organisation.
The FDP is delivered in 15 days over 15 months. This includes a five day residential week.
If you would like to talk with someone about the programme please contact Christine McKenzie on 07810 525210 or Peter Maskell on 020 7647 3834.
