Mental health - voices

There is no substitute for hearing from the people in the excluded groups themselves. This voices section contains links to publications and other media, such as videos, that try to capture the lived experience of their situation.

BBC: Born survivors - Cut up kids
This story is made available on the BBC website based on the 'Born survivors' documentary series shown on BBC3. The stories here are of two young people who have resorted to self-harming as a way of coping with their lives. Tor, now 24, began cutting herself due to stress over schoolwork, and Gary, now 20, has been self-harming since he went to live in a children's home aged 13.

Centre for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Mental Health: Alice’s story
A reflective presentation on dementia by Debra Ioannides. Debra is a student on the Social Work Degree Programme at the University of Birmingham and this work reflected part of a group presentation on dementia, as part of the assessment for the evidence based practice module.

Centre for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Mental Health: Involving service users and carers in interdisciplinary education
National strategies promote the involvement of service users and carers. For service user and carer involvement to be fully realised it needs to be part of interdisciplinary mental health education. Service users and carers can enrich the teaching and learning experiences of students through their involvement in all stages of mental health professional training.

Centre for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Mental Health: Tony Glynn
One of CEIMH's objectives is to provide guidance to the higher education sector to ensure a wider understanding of how students with mental health problems can be supported to access and complete programmes of academic study. This video, created by Tony Glynn, shares one student's story and raises issues that Higher Education Institutions need to address in delivering environments in which to promote wellbeing and success.

Colourmind (2007) any1 film
Colourmind is the website of the Mental Health Race Equality Team for Central Lancashire. Colourmind have produced this film aimed at raising awareness of mental health. It is designed to be used "across a range of organisations and sectors - from community members and voluntary groups to mental health services and non-specialist services". Colourmind wanted the film to give a realistic perspective of mental health problems and commissioned the production team to discuss with mental health service users "how they thought their experiences could be best presented visually". Another feature of the commission was that the film should represent a range of ethnic groups in order to convey the film's main concern 'that anyone can suffer mental health problems'.

The Time to Change Campaign
Time to Change is a programme of work to end discrimination faced by people who experience mental health problems. It is made up of 35 projects is led by Mental Health Media, Mind and Rethnk. It is being evaluated by the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London. The YouTube channel  for the campaign contains videos about people with direct experience of mental health problems.
