Biography/Current role

Dave O'Carroll

Dave O'Carroll graduated with BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature from the University of Manchester. Dave started his career as a Clerical Officer at BT before taking a year off to travel around Australia. On his return Dave worked as Information Officer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Manchester, and was one of the first people at the University to have an email address and use the World Wide Web.

Dave joined The Royal College of Nursing in November 1997 on a part-time one-year basis as Information Officer for the newly created Research & Development Co-ordinating Centre, based in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at the University of Manchester.

Following the review of the RCN Institute in 2006, Dave project managed the development of a new strategic direction for research within the RCN based on a vision where research activity is recognised as coherent, strategic and relevant. Six strategic recommendations were agreed by Council in July 2007 and Dave is part of the team leading on their implementation, and continues to project manage the process.

2010 saw the establishment of the Research & Innovation Team, charged with maximising the impact of RCN-funded research activity through establishing systems and processes to co-ordinate, facilitate and quality assure the commissioning, undertaking, dissemination and use of research within the RCN. Dave's job title has subsequently changed to Information and Communications Manager (Research and Innovation) to reflect this. His main responsibility is to manage all digital communications and information services associated with implementing and evaluating the RCN Research strategy, innovation in practice work stream and ongoing research and innovation activity. This includes overseeing the maintenance and development of the 1,000+ RCN research web pages, and the weekly research e-bulletin with a circulation of over 4,000 direct subscribers.

Dave was a volunteer for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He enjoys tennis and is the current Chair of the Northern Aces Tennis Group, one of only two LGBT tennis groups in the UK.
