Dr Debbie Carrick-Sen

Dr Debbie Carrick-Sen

Between 2007 and 2010 I was co-chair of the RCN Northern Research Society. I qualified as a nurse in 1982 and as a midwife in 1985 although originally from Manchester, I have been in the North East since 1988.  My current post title has three components and includes Trust Lead for Nursing and Midwifery Research where I provide leadership to build and support nursing and midwifery research within the NHS. I also undertake a wide range of practice development projects across the Trust. As part of this role, I am co leading and deputy chair of the AUKUH National initiative to implement Clinical Academic Careers within the NHS. I have a substantial teaching remit where I am a senior lecturer and degree programme director for the Newcastle University Masters in Clinical Research programme.

I also conduct my own personal research. My first research post was in 1990.  I obtained a Masters qualification and a post graduate certificate in education from Northumbria University in the 1990’s and a PhD from Newcastle University in 2006. I have worked in a number of research and senior management NHS roles. I am extremely interested in new and expanding  non medical research roles.

I am the founding member and midwifery academic lead for the Newcastle Midwifery Reproductive Research Group. My PhD was an RCT concerning the role of the specialist midwife for multiples. The study showed that the new role resulted in improved maternal psychological outcome. My research interests include perinatal mental health, the midwife’s role in high risk pregnancy and birth and  new and expanding nursing and midwifery research roles including the development of clinical academic careers. I am membership secretary for the Society of Reproductive and Infant Psychology I have written two book chapters, published over 20 papers and acquired £1.5m in grant income.
