Background
I qualified in the 1980s as a registered general nurse and then mental health nurse and worked clinically in older people’s services in acute trusts and mental health trusts. I studied for my nursing diploma and BSc(Hons) at the Institute of Advanced Nurse Education, RCN in London and then for a PGDip in Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia. I completed my Professional Doctorate in Advancing Practice at Teesside University in 2011.
Current role
I am currently Nurse Consultant and Associate Clinical Director in Mental Health Services for Older People where my clinical work is in the community with older people, most of whom have memory problems. In addition I am the clinical lead for mental health services (for older people) into acute hospitals in Durham and Darlington. I am a non-medical prescriber and facilitate the supervision of others in my service. I have been involved in developing new roles for nurses in my service for a number of years.
Research interests
My doctoral research focussed on understanding complexity in older people from the perspective of registered nurses and I used constructivist grounded theory to do this. I am currently working on a small-scale pilot project to test the use of reminiscence in initial assessments of older people.
