Background
I qualified as an RGN in 1984 at St Mary’s Hospital, London and undertook at a number of surgical, medical and orthopaedic staff nurse posts before focusing my career on neuromedical and neurosurgical nursing at Queen’s Square, London and then at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. Having completed by first degree at East Anglia Polytechnic / University in 1991, I became interested in research and became involved in a regional study of acute head injury management and eventually coordinated the study for 3 years. I followed my husband’s job to Newcastle and began working at a regional mental health audit facilitator and soon found myself involved with the mental health nurse research team with whom I worked on my MPhil ‘What do People need Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurses for?’ I remained in mental health research for 10 years except for a short spell working as a Genetics Research Nurse investigating congenital heart defects. I have been part of research teams throughout the region at Newcastle University, Sunderland University and Tesside University where I worked as a research fellow mainly undertaking service evaluations and also as a lecturer to undergraduate nurses. I joined the teaching team at Northumbria University in 2006.
Current role
I am senior lecturer at Northumbria University, Coach Lane Campus and I am responsible for teaching undergraduate nursing students from all branches. The majority of my teaching is on research methodology, methods and Evidence based practice. I also teach on the BSc dissertation module and a number of 1st year modules relating to communication and genetics.
I am passionate about research and my aim is to make research and evidence for practice accessible and interesting for student nurses.
Research interest
I maintain my interest in mental health research and have recently been part of a team looking at the needs of people in suicide crisis. The focus of my current research is more focused towards nurse education and nurse professionalism. I am continuing to develop my research skills and am in the process of applying to do a PhD.
