Background

On qualifying as a registered nurse I worked as a staff nurse on an oncology ward and then in an oncology out-patient department for several years.  In 2007 I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and Wellbeing followed by my first research post. More recently I finished a Master’s degree in Health Sciences, focusing on Public Health. My dissertation looked at why people continue to smoke post-stroke.

Current role

At present I work on a range of nursing and public health related projects in the Health and Social Care Research Institute at Teesside University.  In collaboration with senior colleagues I develop research proposals, undertake data collection and analysis and produce project reports and academic papers for publication.

Research interests

My primary research projects have mainly focused on evaluations of service developments. Recent topics have included hospital-based Stop Smoking Services, recognition and response to Acutely Ill Adult Patients in hospital, discharge from hospital at end of life and patient experiences of treatment for frozen shoulder. I have also carried out several systematic literature reviews on topics such as nutritional interventions by nurses following stroke and the requirements of people who have a stroke at working-age and their carers.
