[ABSTRACT: A team of academic researchers, service users and carers led a workshop on involving mental health service users and carers in research, on the second day of the NPNR workshop. SUGAR: Service User Group Advising on Research was funded under Professor Len Bowers’ programme of research into reducing conflict and containment in psychiatry and is organised and facilitated by Professor Alan Simpson and supported by other members of the research team. Service user and carer members were recruited with the help of East London NHS Foundation Trust people participation leads and through established contacts with local people. The group of 16 meet once a month to work collaboratively with the academic researchers on all aspects of research projects from initial design through to dissemination of results. Members also take part in capacity building sessions led by Dr Julia Jones to increase knowledge and skills in research processes and methods. Results of a stakeholder evaluation of the group identified key elements that help make the group a success. These included preparation and planning, clear structures, agreed ground rules, good facilitation and ensuring equality and respect amongst all participants. It is intended that the findings will be published shortly in a jointly-written paper. Website: SUGAR]
