National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) - latest published guidance
NICE is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health. The guidance is developed using the expertise of the NHS and the wider healthcare community including NHS staff, healthcare professionals, patients and carers, industry and the academic world. NICE has issued the following guidance to the NHS in England and Wales (April 2013):
- Asthma (severe, persistent, patients aged 6+, adults) - omalizumab
- Vertebral fractures - vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty
- Rheumatoid arthritis - abatacept (2nd line)
- Prostate Artery Embolisation for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
- Insertion of a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator for prevention of sudden cardiac death
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis - pirfenidone
- Corneal inlay implantation for correction of Presbyopia
- Occipital nerve stimulation for intractable chronic migraine
- Gout - canakinumab (terminated appraisal)
- Health and wellbeing of looked-after children and young people
- Supporting people to live well with dementia
