Finding the evidence
"Standing on the shoulders of giants" is a phrase well known to researchers, and anyone embarking on a piece of research will want to know what has already been done. The most obvious starting point is to conduct a literature search, and full RCN members can get help with this. Whilst the finding the evidence section of our website provides a signposting service to various databases of completed research, including the recently launched NHS Evidence portal, the latest news section lists recently published reports, articles and research.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) develops guidance using the expertise of the NHS and the wider healthcare community including NHS staff, health care professionals, patients and carers, industry and the academic world. New guidance this month (June 2012) includes acute upper GI bleeding; autism in adults; breast cancer; lung cancer; migraine; healthcare-associated infections; prostate cancer; sickle cell; venous thromboembolic diseases.
