Capturing Impact – a practical toolkit for nurse consultants

Developed as part of a 2-year research study funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing, Capturing Impact is a new practical resource that explores the approaches to measuring the impact of nurse consultants on patient, professional and organisational outcomes. A team of researchers (Professor Kate Gerrish, Dr Ann McDonnell and Dr Fiona Kennedy) at Sheffield Hallam University developed the toolkit through a rigorous research study.

The interactive toolkit introduces the reader to what is meant by impact, and why and how nurse consultants might go about capturing their impact. A variety of activities and examples are included that encourage nurse consultants to think about how to identify indicators of impact, consider which of these are most important and then go on to demonstrate that impact in practice. A practical framework for capturing impact is introduced, based on the authors' research and this framework is used to structure the examples relating to patients, staff and the organisation.

The toolkit, further resources, and executive summary relating to the research study are available to download free of charge from the Sheffield Hallam University website.

The researchers are very keen to receive any feedback and comments from nurse consultants and any others (such as line managers or advanced practice nurses) who have downloaded or used the toolkit.
