Nurse-led research wins 2011 RCGP Research Paper of the Year for dementias and neurodegenerative diseases category.

Announced in June 2012, RCN Research Society member, Professor Vari Drennan, won this award for her qualitative study of managing incontinence with people with dementia living at home.

Entitled ‘A taboo within a stigma?’ this qualitative study investigated carers’ perceptions of the range of incontinence problems they help their relative with and the strategies they use to manage these.  It looked at the care GPs and nurses provide concluding that primary care professionals could be more proactive in enquiry, repeated over time, about toileting and incontinence problems, giving advice and information to reduce crisis and problems.

Professor Vari Drennan is a keynote speaker at the RCN 2013 annual international research conference in Belfast.
