Background

A group of experts from across the UK who believed that R&D was a means of promoting excellence in care formed a Working Party to consider ways in which a culture that values and promotes both research and development in nursing could be identified, developed, sustained and rewarded.

The group believed that the first step towards achieving their aims was through the development of an RCN position statement incorporating examples of good practice.

A draft paper for consultation (Word, 251K) was developed and all stakeholders invited to comment critically on this work.

Organisations were invited to send examples of good practice, for possible inclusion in the final document and/or on this website.

A feedback template (Word, 37.5K) was developed for this purpose.

There was an opportunity to participate in face to face consultation with members of the working party at the RCN’s International Nursing Research conference on 10th – 12th April 2003 in Manchester and on 30th April 2003 at RCN Congress in Harrogate.

The position statement was officially launched at RCN Congress in Harrogate in May 2004
