Knowledge generation by the RCN task and finish group

The RCN currently engages in a spectrum of ‘knowledge generation’ activities for a range of purposes:

  1. Knowledge generation covers a continuum of activities from finding information to support a position, membership surveys, audit, market research, evaluation research, empirical research, research synthesis through to translational and transformational research;
  2. Some knowledge is generated in-house and some is commissioned externally;
  3. Knowledge is generated to inform RCN policy development and to contribute to the evidence base for nursing practice.

Decision making regarding the generation of knowledge by the RCN is currently taken at departmental level. A co-ordinated, strategic approach to the generation of new knowledge could increase value for money, facilitate the cross fertilisation of good practice and skill development, and increase the overall quality of research undertaken or commissioned.

In the shared vision for the RCN’s role in the generation of knowledge:

  1. The RCN’s research priorities are collectively identified to inform and support the RCN’s strategic plan;
  2. External research agendas are influenced through partnership working;
  3. Research is commissioned through transparent processes from in-house or external expertise as appropriate;
  4. Quality assurance mechanisms are in place and value for money is assured.
