Knowledge use for policy and practice

The purpose of generating new knowledge is to use it in areas where it can make a difference. There are a range of organisations established to support the dissemination and use of knowledge in health care across the UK.

The RCN currently engages in a spectrum of ‘knowledge utilisation’ activities for a range of purposes:

  1. Second only to Congress, the RCN International Nursing Research Conference is the largest annual RCN event and is recognised as providing a unique and highly valued contribution to the professional research endeavour;
  2. RCN and nursing research is currently undertaken across a range of RCN departments, including the RCN Publishing Company, RCN Institute, RCN Events, RCN Communications and RCN Web. There are a variety of strategic alliances in place to support these endeavours including for example the RCN/BMJ publication Evidence-based Nursing;
  3. Research evidence is currently used in RCN policy developments to varying degrees;
  4. The use of new knowledge in policy work and in clinical practice is currently facilitated through the RCN’s Policy Department and the RCNI.

It is the strategic intention of the RCN that it is recognised, locally, nationally and internationally, as the voice of UK nursing. In the shared vision for knowledge use, RCN policy and practice guidance are underpinned by the best available evidence, and the role of the RCN in the dissemination and use of knowledge is recognised as strategic, seamless, targeted, timely and complementary to other key organisations in the field.
