Research Policy for Nursing Task and Finish Group

The research policy imperatives globally within nursing are concerned with:

  1. developing nursing research capacity and capability to undertake and utilise research;
  2. establishing ‘clinical-academic’ career pathways within the nursing professions;
  3. influencing the research commissioning agenda in order to develop a robust evidence base to support nursing policy and practice;
  4. securing sustainable funding streams to support the nursing contribution to the healthcare research and development endeavour.

The RCN’s Research Society has built strategic alliances with other professional organisations and Royal Colleges nationally and internationally to progress these imperatives. However the RCN’s potential has not yet been realised as evidenced by the RCN Congress resolution: That this meeting of RCN Congress demands that there should be a Research Council for nursing.

In the shared vision for research policy:

  1. nursing capability is developed to lead research across all areas of nursing practice throughout the UK and the international nursing community;
  2. research and practice are more fully integrated;
  3. the impact of nurse-led research is demonstrably increased;
  4. there are sustainable funding streams across the UK and internationally to support the nursing contribution to the multidisciplinary healthcare research agenda.
