Aim

To develop a coordinated, strategic RCN approach to nursing research and development policy

Terms of reference

  • To clarify the group’s purpose
  • To determine and prioritise the tasks required
  • To agree group membership
  • To draw up timetable and milestones
  • To identify a wider reference group for consultation and comment
  • To monitor progress against timeline and be accountable for results
  • To produce a short report that will feed in to an overall RCN R&D Strategy
  • To identify the implications for the development and delivery of the future RCN Strategic Plan (2008-2013)

Actions

  1. Map the current UK and international Nursing Research and Development Policy Landscape with particular attention to the research policy of professional nursing organisations.
  2. Determine datasets required to identify current UK research and development capacity and capability in nursing.
  3. Scope current endeavours to develop and sustain research and development capacity and capability in nursing.
  4. Determine where and how nursing research priorities are currently developed and what they are.
  5. Determine where, how and by whom health and social care research priorities are established and their relationship to the concerns of nursing practice.
  6. Map key UK research policy / scientific boards and identify the level of nursing representation.
  7. Scope health and social care research funding sources and current knowledge of the success of nursing in the research funding stakes compared to other health care disciplines.
  8. Identify key stakeholders and agendas the RCN should seek to influence
  9. Determine whether the impact of health and social care research on the media and policy is related to the topics researched by nurses or the methodologies used.
  10. Review methods for assessing and increasing the media impact of nursing research and development
  11. Review methods for assessing and increasing the impact of nursing research on health and social care policy
  12. Formulate recommendations
