Abstract:

This study which forms a PhD Thesis intends to explore the state of person centred care in the ward environment. Using a grounded theory approach it explores the knowledge, views and experiences of person centred care from the viewpoint of both staff and patients. It elaborates on the factors enabling person-centred care and those which prove to be a barrier to this way of working. The research is being carried out in the Older Persons Unit (OPU) of an NHS Trust in England. On each of three wards the researcher is present as a participant observer. Semi structured taped interviews are carried out with staff and patients on the ward. The interviews are transcribed and analysed to examine areas such as personal beliefs, opinions, experiences and ways of working. Themes emerging from initial interviews were identified and used to develop the subsequent interviews. So far the researcher has spent approximately 80 hours observing on the first 2 wards and 24 staff and 2 patient interviews have been obtained. Observation and interviews on the final ward are to be carried out in October. Areas of interest that emerged from the initial reading of the transcripts are: The impact of management systems and organisational factors Staffing levels, recruitment and retention How staff are valued and supported in their role Individual definitions of patient centred care and lack of knowledge amongst staff of this term or this way of working Patient choice. Training opportunities and lack of formal training for staff Staff relationships Working with families. The final analysis and write up of the project will take place following the final phase of data collection and it is anticipated that the completed study will then be available for presentation as a poster and concurrent session at the RCN International Nursing Research Conference.
