International scientific advisory panel

The role of the International Scientific Advisory Panel (ISAP) is to review the abstracts that are received.

Please note that invitations have now been sent out to prospective ISAP members (W/C 16 September 2008). If you have not received your invitation and think you should have, there may be a problem with the email. Please contact Dave O'Carroll directly before 3 November 2008.

Contact: Dave O'Carroll

BACKGROUND

The conference has a Scientific Committee, which consists of 7 people, who are responsible for managing the process of abstract selection and preparing the professional content of the conference programme. However, with over 400 abstracts usually submitted for consideration each year, it is important to have as many reviewers with a wide range of expertise to consider these abstracts.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Scientific Committee look to you, the International Scientific Advisory Panel, for expert advice on the suitability of an abstract for inclusion in the conference. Each abstract will be reviewed by at least 3 different reviewers, and the Scientific Committee will usually go along with the consensus view.  The main aim of peer review is to improve the standards of the scientific content of the conference programme. Be honest and courteous. Reviewers sometimes disagree. In the case of abstracts where reviewers have disagreed, the Scientific Committee will weigh carefully all of the reviewers' comments and make a final decision. Reviewers are invited to judge abstracts against predetermined criteria. There is guidance on the criteria for submitting an abstract, which you are welcome to view; this is the same criteria that you will use as a reviewer to decide whether to accept or reject an abstract: http://www.rcn.org.uk/development/researchanddevelopment/rs/research2009/cfa

CRITERIA

The following criteria must be met in order to nominate yourself for membership of the ISAP
i) You must have successfully submitted an abstract to an international conference
ii) You must have had an article accepted in a peer review journal
iii) You must be available to review abstracts between 5 November – 12 November 2008

BENEFITS

As an ISAP member, you will be acknowledged in the conference programme and on the official conference website in recognition of your contribution, and an electronic copy of the conference proceedings will be forwarded to you after the event if you are unable to attend in person. Reviewers also contribute to the academic development of the profession by providing constructive feedback to the authors.

TIMESCALES

To allow you to make an informed choice as to whether you will be in a position to complete the reviewing, the following dates have been confirmed. Those of you who have accepted the invitation to become an ISAP member will be emailed week commencing 15 September 2008 with full details of how to register with the online system. You will be able to register as an ISAP member right up until the close of abstract submissions. Deadline for receipt of abstracts is 3 November 2008. Abstracts will be allocated to members of the ISAP by 5 November 2008. You will be requested to review approximately 20 abstracts online. The online reviews must then be completed by 12 November 2008. In order to ensure that the abstracts you review fall within your sphere of expertise and interest, when you register with the system you will be requested to indicate your areas of expertise using keywords provided. This whole process will be managed electronically.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR

In order to attract a truly international audience to this conference, I would ask that you forward details of the conference web site to your contacts. You may also wish to nominate colleagues whom you think may also be interested in becoming an ISAP member.  Please feel free to forward this email as you see fit. And of course, I hope that you will consider attending the conference. Being a member of the International Scientific Advisory Panel does not preclude you from submitting an abstract (you will not be asked to review your own abstract!).
