Health Joint Liaison Committee (JLC)

Nurses in higher education

The RCN has a joint membership agreement with the University and College Union (UCU) and the Education Institute of Scotland (EIS). If you work in Higher Education you can gain the benefits of both the RCN / UCU and EIS so that you have support not only in matters relating to your terms and conditions of employment but also on the professional matters that affect you in your daily work. Details of the joint membership arrangements are available on the RCN web site.

Nurse educators employed in universities are employed and paid on higher education terms and conditions. A new higher education framework has been developed underpinned by the principle of equal pay for work of equal value.

Additionally, the RCN is working with other health unions like the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) with the UCU and EIS on the Joint Liaison Committee (JLC). This committee meets three times a year and considers issues relating to our joint members. Gerry O'Dwyer (Senior Employment Relations Adviser) and Gill Robertson (RCN Student Adviser) sit on the JLC for the RCN, alongside Ann Corrin, who represents the RCN Education Forum and Michael Traynor, who represents the RCN Research Society.
