UK Clinical Research Facility Network - Update

Established in April 2008, the UK Clinical Research Facility Network (Network) supports a portfolio of activities embracing all Clinical Research Facilities (CRFs), NIHR Biomedical Research Centres and Units and those working in experimental medicine centres across the UK.

Under the direction of the Strategic Planning Team the purpose of the Network is to share expertise and good practice between facilities.
A major achievement during the past year has been the launch of the highly successful UKCRF Network portal. It provides a platform for sharing good practice, knowledge and expertise, opportunities for collaboration and information exchange, helps avoid duplication and underpins the Networks main objectives of promoting excellence and consistency in terms of CRF operation across the network.

Launched in October 2008, the portal is populated with information on Standard Operating Policies and Procedures (SOPs), management structures, study protocols, job descriptions, training & education, news events & bulletins, calendar and links to other facilities and sites. There is also a discussion forum to share thoughts and ideas. Since its launch, we have registered over 320 members onto the portal.

The Network has been involved in a variety of other initiatives centred on core activities such as quality assurance, study intensity, education and training and research nurse competencies.
Highlights include:
• Establishing a set of recommendations for managing MRHA inspections.
• Developing and refining a research study intensity tool to assist in measuring resource allocation and quantifying research activity.
• In collaboration with the Royal College of Nursing, production and validation of a Competency Framework for Clinical Research Nurses.
• Developing and facilitating a common CRF approach to staff induction.
• Coordinated engagement with National and International professional groups.

The Network co-ordinates a nationwide UK CRF Open day event during National Science week and Healthcare Science Awareness week. CRFs open their doors to the general public for a day, inviting them in to see what goes on and discuss clinical trial activity with CRF staff. The day is also an opportunity for CRFs to showcase some of their research and demonstrate the important contribution they make in developing new treatment techniques, skills, knowledge and awareness in health related issues. Activities include tours of the facility, information displays, interactive displays, presentations and practical demonstrations.

July 2009 saw the 5th annual CRF Conference held in Cambridge. It was another very successful event with information on current research as well as new and emerging developments within the clinical research arena. It also gave delegates an opportunity to discuss topical issues with colleagues from other clinical research facilities across the country.

The UKCRF Network has become a recognised and invaluable focal point for the collaborative growth and sharing of translational clinical research expertise. The plans for the next 12 months will be to build on initial success and develop new initiatives.
