25 November 2008: Launch of RCN Research Society (Northern) and the annual Winifred Raphael Memorial Lecture

On 25 November 2008, the RCN Research Society (Northern) was launched at the Research Beehive, Newcastle University. The event was attended by over eighty people including Dr Ann McMahon, RCN research advisor, Professor Karen Cox, University of Nottingham, members of the national RCN Research Society steering committee, the chairs from other Research Society regional groups, members of the Northern Research Society and Melanie Hornett, Director of nursing and patient services, Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Ann McMahon presented on the national context of nursing research. This was followed by six short presentations by members of the national RCN Research Society steering committee. A panel discussion followed. A drinks reception was held, following which Professor Karen Cox presented the 2008 Winfred Raphael Memorial lecture on the topic of Clinical Trials and Clinical Research in Cancer - A Nursing Perspective.
