It’s official. Strawberry daiquiris are good for you

Published: 26 April 2007

All dark coloured berry fruits are packed with antioxidants, but serving them in the form of a daiquiri may make them even healthier, scientists have shown.

Researchers from Thailand and the US were exploring ways to help keep strawberries fresh during storage when they discovered that treating the berries with alcohol increased antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity within the fruit.

Scientists at Kasetsart University in Thailand working with the United States Department of Agriculture treated the berries with ethanol, the common drinking alcohol that coincidentally fuels many a popular cocktail.

They found that ethanol improved the physiology of the fruit as measured by several different laboratory tests for antioxidant activity. This helped the berries resist decay, but in turn would also make the strawberries healthier to eat.

Their research is reported in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. All that’s missing is a recipe for strawberry daiquiris.
