The RCN UK TB Nurses Travel and Research Awards
Maricel Cootauco, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Tuberculosis, St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, was funded to visit the Philippines to study "development of greater public awareness through effective health promotion aids in prevention, control and management of TB". As a result of the study, Maricel is undertaking a project to develop awareness material to distribute to all schools within St George's Hospital's catchment area and to GP surgeries and other community services.

Sara Hemming, TB Clinical Nurse Specialist, Find and Treat team, London, was funded to study TB case management in New York (NYC). The aim of the visit was to observe the proven successful NYC TB case management model and undertake training in the cohort review process to inform the implementation and evaluation of an effective case management system to control TB in London. As a result of the study, Sara developed a five point plan.

Nuffield Trust, RCN and IHM Joint International Study Awards
Mary Dawood who is a nurse consultant in emergency medicine and Iain Taylor an integrated care manager at Imperial College NHS Trust travelled to the USA to explore the benefits of a dedicated paediatric trauma system. They learnt the trauma centre's successful outcomes depended on its ability to execute a multidisciplinary team approach to the care of injured children right from the outset. Mary and Iain were both presented with their award at the IHM Annual Awards Dinner on 14 May 2009 in London.
Caroline Lawson, Consultant Nurse-Stroke, also received a Nuffield Trust, RCN and IHM Joint International Study Award at the IHM Annual Awards Dinner for her study tour to Finland with IHM member Alan Bartle. They explored Finland's excellent acute stroke service which has worldwide recognition, and is a fraction of the cost that we spend in England. Previous Nuffield Trust/RCN/IHM Joint International Study Award winners
RCN member Elizabeth Baines, Patient Safety Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Specialist at Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust, undertook a joint international study tour with Cathy Howe, Head of Clinical Governance at the trust. They visited Jönköping County Council in Sweden to study promoting a quality improvement culture in the clinical environment.
