Carmel Bagness, the RCN Midwifery and Women’s Health Adviser, explains why she chose to work for the RCN

This article supports "Women and children first" on page 8 of RCN Bulletin, Issue 286, 30 November.

As a globally recognised organisation that supports nurses and nursing, the RCN is a great place to be right now, it is forward thinking and has a positive philosophy of enabling members to make the best use of available evidence to provide high quality care.

It is an organisation which provides a voice for its members, in a range of different ways, via publications, forums, continuing professional developments, and engagement with consultations and research, to name but a few.

The Frontline First campaign and the active engagement of staff and members across the UK are key strategic movements towards making the practice arena better for the practitioners and service users.

The RCN also supports a number of midwives, both those working in the NHS and in independent practice, as well as a growing number of health care assistants. Being part of a pro-active, evidence based, strategically and politically active organisation at a time of great change in the health care provision represents a good place to be at this time.
