Discussion day for the independent sector
The RCN hosted a discussion day recently to hear the views of senior nurses working in the independent care sector.
The RCN values the expertise of frontline staff in helping shape the current adult social care system and, as a leading organisation for change, has identified shifting political issues affecting independent social care.
The meeting was used to hear ideas from senior staff and consider ways forward. With 30% of RCN members working in the independent sector, most in nursing and care homes, the RCN believes this area is a priority for future activity.
The event was supported by other national stakeholders, including the English Community Care Association, the Registered Nursing Association and the National Care Forum. The RCN was represented by Older People’s Nursing Adviser Nicky Hayes and Clare Jacobs, Employment Relations Adviser.
Clare said the RCN was ‘keen to work in partnership with care home organisations for the improvement of patient care and the benefit of the business’.
Nicky said the RCN’s successful Frontline First and Dignity campaigns were examples of campaigning models participants could use to encourage change to the system.
Participants were encouraged to discuss in groups the areas of social care where they thought change was essential. Sharon Blackburn from the National Care Forum summarised the discussion into 10 key areas for the RCN to develop. The RCN is committed to following up specific actions from the event, which will be published in due course.
