Historicalnursing1Did you know?

As well as the National Archives, which now have more than 15,000 nursing service records available online in recognition of the significance of nurses’ contribution to the First World War, the RCN has its very own archives collection open to everyone on the RCN archives pages

The RCN archives

Some of the most important collections dedicated to the history of the nursing profession in the UK can be found on these pages.
The majority of records relate to the work and history of the RCN, and include images, recordings objects and historical documents, but there are also collections from other nursing organisations and private individuals.

Photographic collection

A wide variety of images taken from the world of nursing from the 1880s to the 1980s can be found in the photographic collection, including images of hospital wards, portraits, nursing personalities, postcards, hospital buildings, equipment and nurses working in the community.  All images on this page are taken from the RCN archives.

Oral history collection

There are over 700 hours ofArchivesimage2 recordings available which take you into the lives and experiences of individual nurses dating from the early 20th to the 21st centuries.

Historical nursing journals

The archives department also holds an unrivalled range of English language nursing journals from around the world, with the earliest issues date back to 1888.
