The learning representative's role at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board

This story is in support of ‘Being a learning rep is challenging and rewarding’, which was publuished on page 10 of the 7 September 2011 issue of RCN Bulletin.

Gill Williams is an RCN learning representative, she explains how her role works with the Staff Side Forum.

The NHS in Wales is undergoing a period of extensive change and reorganisation. As a member of the Staff Side Forum at BCUHB, I can see firsthand how vital the role of the RCN activist is and how important it is that we all work together on behalf of members.

As a RCN learning representative, I have a particular interest in nurse education and clinical competence. I appreciate the complexity of learning and the relevance of the unique experience of the individual.

I understand the importance of both the personal and professional aspects of learning and development and know how vital these are to meaningful clinical nurse practice. And I believe it is important to ensure these are not lost in the ether when change and reorganisation is taking place.

It is all about keeping a focus on the individual amid all the changes which are afoot: and keeping a balance to guard against the organisational needs dominating attention.

I recently compiled a briefing paper for staff side on staffing levels and skill mix and was able to weave education around the issues of staff numbers. I made the case for more attention to be given to the complexity and specialisation of health care today and the importance of nurses and healthcare support workers having the right skills and clinical competence to give effective care.

I have found the role of learning representative to be both challenging and rewarding and would recommend it. It has been an excellent developmental experience and I have witnessed the dedication and hard work of other RCN activists and appreciate their support of me. I have also been very fortunate to have the support of the RCN officers and am very grateful for it.

There is a real spirit of inclusiveness within the RCN in North Wales and this is essential if learning representatives are to be part of the Staff Side Forums in Wales.
