Awards 2008
Each Congress, the RCN recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to the nursing profession, health care or to the RCN.
This year, the RCN bestowed Fellowships, Honorary Fellowships and the Award of Merit on six deserving individuals at the opening ceremony on Sunday 27 April 2008.
RCN Award of Merit
Christine Knight

Christine receives the Award of Merit for the invaluable commitment she has given the RCN Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing, in particular for her support of its network of local groups across the UK and for editing the society's newsletter.
Fellowship
Cynthia Atwell

Cynthia is awarded Fellowship of the RCN for being a true pioneer for nursing and an inspirational leader in occupational health nursing nationally and internationally. She is only the second nurse to have been made an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Health Medicine and the only practising nurse to be elected as a commissioner onto the Health and Safety Commission.
Vanessa Martin

Vanessa receives Fellowship of the RCN in recognition of her leadership in the field of cleft lip and palate care, for which she has an international reputation. She has established the only education programme to meet the needs of children with clefts.
Professor Kathleen McCourt

One of the most respected academics in the field of international nursing, Kathleen is awarded the RCN Fellowship for her vision and leadership in service modernisation and management of change in health and social care.
Honorary Fellowship
Dorothy Ngoma

Dorothy receives Honorary Fellowship of the RCN for her tireless work to improve the health care of the people of Malawi and to raise the stature of nursing. Through her inspirational leadership of the National Organisation of Nurses in Malawi she has also championed the rights and dignity of patients.
Majda Slajmer Japelj

As a crusader for nurses and midwives working in Eastern Europe, Majda is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the RCN for demonstrating the major role nurses can play in improving the health of society when given the opportunity. She has also championed patients and families.
