The biopsychosocial care provided for British Armed Forces battlefield casualties
Tuesday: 12.30pm to 1.30pm
Location: The Holiday Inn Hotel, Harewood Suite 2
Organiser: RCN Defence Nursing Forum
The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine was established in 2002, with the Clinical Division based within the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The aim was to place military clinical staff into a busy NHS hospital in order for military personnel to develop the clinical skills and competencies essential for dealing with the victims of conflict. Over the past two years, RCDM has changed considerably in response to the demands placed on both the NHS and the military as increasing numbers of complex polytrauma injuries have been evacuated back to Birmingham.
This presentation will provide an overview of the current biopsychosocial support offered to injured service personnel and their families in Birmingham. This lecture will refer to the current structure and systems in place, focusing on the clinical developments in the management of musculoskeletal injury, burns and plastics, pain management, and surveillance.
Care and medical doctrine has developed in response to the availability of new technologies, and in line with new treatment regimes that have positively influenced survival rates. As a result, lessons learnt are being applied in the operational arena, and have the potential to advance care within the NHS. In addition, the lecture will indicate new initiatives in areas such as mental health and welfare that are providing a gold standard service for injured soldiers and their relatives.

Managing long-term conditions - what has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) got to do with ME?
Tuesday: 12.45pm
Location: The Majestic Hotel, Ballroom
Organiser: RCN Primary Care Educators Forum
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (or encephalopathy) is a relatively common long term illness and is estimated to affect at least 0.2 - 0.4% of the population. It can cause profound, prolonged illness and disability, which has a substantial impact on people with CFS/ME and their carers. However, there is some evidence to suggest that some nurses have a poor understanding of the needs of CFS/ME sufferers and their families. Therefore, there is an urgent need to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding of issues faced by sufferers the relevant policies and guidelines aimed to guide practice.

Safe immunisation practice
Tuesday: 12.45pm to 2.15pm
Location: The Holiday Inn Hotel, Bramham Suite
Organiser: RCN Research Society
Safe immunisation practice rightly creates interest from the public. Unsurprising given the impact of the autism scare, now over 10 years ago, which resulted in parents choosing not to immunise their children and contributing to the rising levels of measles in children in the UK.
Dr Linda Diggle (RCN Research Society Akinsanya Award Winner 2008), undertook work to determine best practice in immunisation administration. Her study sought to establish the technique and equipment to assure the best response (protection) and least trauma to children. The presentation forms part of the RCN Research Society's commitment to speeding the uptake of best evidence into practice. This event will be of interest to all delegates concerned about immunisation safety as a public health concern.

You're not alone - personal safety for lone workers
Tuesday: 12.45pm to 2.15pm
Location: The Old Swan Hotel, Rose Room
Organiser: RCN UK Safety Representatives Committee
Following the launch of our survey and campaign in 2007, the protection and personal safety of lone working nurses and health care assistants remains high on the RCN's agenda. Changes in the way care is delivered, including more out of hours services, has led to an increase in lone working amongst RCN members. The RCN campaign led to the announcement by the Health Minister of £29 million to fund lone worker devices for NHS staff in England. Devices are also being piloted in Wales and the RCN continues to lobby for similar initiatives in Scotland and Northern Ireland. This fringe will provide advice and tips on personal safety for lone workers, risk assessments and information on how to successfully implement lone worker devices across an organisation. If you are a safety representative or member concerned about the safety of lone workers this fringe is for you.
