Students’ Day Interview: Stuart Young, RCN ANS Executive
Students’ Day is the highlight of the student nursing calendar, says Stuart Young, RCN Association of Nursing Students’ Executive and Student Nurse.
What does Congress have to offer students?
So much. Congress is massive – and full of learning and development opportunities. Students get the opportunity to see how everything works and engage in key debates. They also get the chance to participate in the democracy of Congress, network with their peers and feel part of something special.
What do you think will be the highlight of this year’s Students’ Day and why?
Definitely Bethann Siviter. She’s closing the afternoon with a speech about the transition from student to staff nurse which is bound to be inspirational. Bethann speaks with an infectious sense of passion and instils a real sense of pride in our profession. This is the one bit of Students’ Day I am not missing!
Is it worthwhile for students to visit the exhibition? What might they get out of it?
It’s a fantastic networking opportunity as it’s packed full of potential future employers and influencers. There are often freebies too! The Students’ Day conference ‘Reach your Destination’ is taking place in the afternoon, leaving the morning free to visit the exhibition.
Apart from learning and development opportunities at Congress, is there anything else on offer?
It’s the perfect place to meet fellow students and ANS student officers and find out more about the RCN. Plus, it’s a chance to really feel part of the RCN nursing family, which is an empowering feeling.
The student disco is always very popular! Even those who aren’t students can’t resist it. This year there’ll be a band, a BBQ and a DJ.
What’s your best memory of Students’ Day – and is there anything not to like?
I have quite a few good memories. Every year there’s something new and exciting. Ann Keen MP taking some challenging questions last year was certainly a highlight. The speakers are always brilliant.
It can be manic! But this is also what’s so good about it. There’s a real buzz.
