3. Getting your words in order
The exposition of the premise intended for deliberation via the strategic composition of prose is integral to the delegates’ comprehension of the proposal’s intent. Or more simply – it’s important to clearly word your item so that delegates understand what you’re asking them to consider.
Here are some tips to help you do just that:
- Keep it short and simple
- Introduce one idea and say it once
- Don’t qualify it with sub clauses
- Don’t use really long sentences and words
- Avoid repetition
- Keep it lively
- Stimulate debate, don’t debate
- Read it out loud
Forsooth, is it music to one’s ears? If the words don’t sound like ones you’d use in a conversation, chances are you’re going to leave others scratching their heads. Think about the words you would use when speaking to a friend – or better yet, read it out to them and find out which bits they don’t get and improve them. - Get help If writing isn’t your strong point it doesn’t mean your great idea has to fall at the first hurdle.
