The term ‘challenging behaviour’ is frequently used to describe any patient who displays aggressive, violent or difficult to manage behaviour. The underlying cause of such behaviours can be very complex, and have multiple and interrelated factors contributing to their actions.

This presentation will focus on the management of patients who are particularly vulnerable to the instigation of restrictive measures. It will emphasise the importance of prevention, de-escalation techniques, identifying possible triggers and modifying the environment to protect staff and maintain patient dignity - providing staff with the confidence and skills to deal with challenging situations.
