This important document has been edited and updated to reflect current practice by a bowel nurse specialist and a member of the RCN Gastroenterology Forum along with the RCN Continence Care Forum.

RCN guidelines have always been seen as very important documents in highlighting and promoting good practice across all four countries of the United Kingdom. They are often quoted, and used to influence local policies and training. This updated version incorporates the Skills for Health competences, linking each aspect of bowel care to those specific competences that health care staff would need to achieve in order to provide the highest possible level of care.
