Nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring high standards of patient care. Investing in the preparation of the future nursing workforce has never been more important. Effective mentorship of students therefore assumes critical importance (RCN, 2012). It is essential that mentors are carefully selected, educated and supported so they can create learning environments within which nursing students can develop the skills that will enable them to deliver compassionate care (Department of Health, 2012).

Drawing on recent research conducted at The Open University, this session will explore what effective mentorship looks like and the implications for mentor preparation and ongoing support.
