Communication is one of the most important aspects of health care. Done well, everybody benefits. Done badly, it can lead to complaints. Although daunting and demanding, communicating ‘bad news’ is a skill that can be learnt.
Continued development of a range of nurse-led services, and the key role of specialist nurses in co-ordinating care means that inevitably nurses will take on a key role in both breaking bad news themselves, or supporting children, young people and families following diagnosis or other difficult discussions.
