Blood is a precious resource to manage effectively. In 2011 an audit of blood transfusion practice was undertaken across the UK by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). It addressed two serious risks which can occur if correct procedures are not followed by staff involved in administering blood to patients, the risk of misidentifying the patient to be transfused and the risk of the patient experiencing an undetected transfusion reaction. Supported by the RCN, 247 hospitals participated in this audit in 2011 and contributed data on 9,250 transfusions.

This seminar will present the methodology and findings of the audit as part of the larger cycle of blood safety audits by NHSBT and discuss how blood safety can be further supported.
