  • | The ACC 1B

Preventing the use of inappropriate restraint and minimising the use of restraint are major issues in nursing. Here, we look at restraint, human rights and our duty of care. We will:

  • acknowledge UK legislation on human rights and mental capacity and current guidance on safeguarding vulnerable adults
  • highlight new practice frameworks, the RCN’s Principles of Nursing Practice and the potential use of new technologies in care
  • discuss dilemmas in nursing practice such as ‘clinical holding’ of a patient who needs treatment but is resistant, and the implications of using restraint
  • focus on the alternatives to restraint.

You are invited to discuss examples of the challenges you face in your practice and bring examples of best practice.
