Tony Grayson was a long-serving lawyer at the RCN, who sadly passed away in July 2010. This annual lecture is a tribute to his work.

In recent months, whistleblowing has been constantly in the headlines; from Leveson to the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust inquiries. It has become increasingly clear that many whistleblowers are too afraid to speak out, have been ignored, or been dismissed and/or victimised by their employers and colleagues. The recent revelations about “gagging clauses” in compromise agreements exposed a fundamental misunderstanding about the protections which exist under the current whistleblowing legislation, as well as the legal loopholes which deter many would-be whistleblowers.

This talk is aimed at outlining important aspects of whistleblowing including how whistleblowers are protected; the effectiveness of current law; the role of regulators and forthcoming reform.
