Domestic abuse and violence: what do you need to know?
“We must ensure robust mechanisms are in place to give health care professionals the tools to support patients facing domestic abuse and violence,” said Lisa Crooks Mental Health Forum and South West Board member.
With the assistance of Alun Mountjoy, Chris Barber and Lisa Crooks, the RCN Diversity and Equality Unit hosted this event to update members on best practice when faced with domestic abuse and violence. Speakers offered perspectives on domestic abuse in different groups, including abuse of men and those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Attendees watched a short film illustrating behaviours before, during and after an incident of domestic abuse. Speakers then role-played an alternative scenario, highlighting good practice by asking non-leading questions and creating a safe space for patients to speak out.
Alun reminded colleagues to observe confidentiality when responding to this kind of abuse and encouraged them to refer to the NMC code of conduct. “Breaking confidentiality is a risk with this patient group”, he said. “We don’t want them to disengage with NHS services.”
Members were told about forthcoming RCN guidance on domestic abuse and violence and invited to help shape it with their own experiences. Contact diversity.team@rcn.org.uk to input.
