Wales CNO faces questions from members

The pressures facing nursing staff in Wales were highlighted as questions were put to the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, Professor Jean White, at Congress today.

Safe staffing levels, skills mix, the increasing layers of management and the burden of bureaucracy were addressed as members from across Wales shared their concerns about their workplace challenges. With Wales having the highest number of older people in the UK – one in six are over 80 years old, the issue of appropriate care was highlighted as a key issue that had to be faced.

Professor White said she used this regular event as an opportunity to hear what frontline staff have to say. “This winter was very hard in Wales,” she said. “I take my hat off to every single one of you working on the frontline. Thank you all.”

Professor White is the head of the Nursing and Midwifery professions in NHS Wales and is responsible for the professional performance and development of nurse directors and the nursing profession.
