Partnerships in Care and the RCN: making partnership working with the independent sector work for everyone
Over 30 per cent of RCN members deliver care outside of the NHS and increasing numbers of members are moving into the independent sector. The RCN currently has over 50 partnership agreements with independent organisations.
Partnerships in Care (PiC) works closely with the RCN to support employees who are RCN members. David Boyle, National Learning and Development Manager for PiC, was invited to speak at this event to share an example of effective partnership working.
“We value the opportunity to work with the RCN and reflect on how we’re doing. The RCN pushes us that bit further” said David.
Director of Nursing Sarah Shepherd brought this to life with her own account of a career developed in the independent sector, with the support of both PiC and the RCN. “It has been so important to me that PiC works with the RCN; it gives has given me confidence in the knowledge that they are doing things right”, she said.
Emma Lenehan, the RCN’s lead on the PiC partnership was clear that, while there is much to celebrate about this relationship, even more importantly PiC demonstrates willing on a national scale to work with the RCN to rectify problems.
“Working with independent employers makes a difference”, said Employment Relations Adviser Clare Jacobs. “It is vital for nurses and HCAs working in this sector, has huge implications on patient care, and is key to the future of the RCN.”
“It is so encouraging to hear that the RCN will continue to recognise and support us, as many of us inevitably move into the independent sector”, said Individual Commissioning Nurse Anne Doggart following the event.
