RCN Congress and Exhibition Liverpool 21-25 April 2013

The Mary Seacole Awards need you

This event promoted the annual Mary Seacole Awards, and RCN Deputy President Cecilia Anim’s opening message was clear: “If you have an idea, please come forward and make a difference.”

Speaker Christine Mckenzie, RCN Learning and Development Facilitator, outlined details of the award programmes, which provide funding for health care projects that aim to improve the health outcomes of people from black and minority ethnic communities.

“We are looking for people with an idea to make a difference and the passion to see it through,” said Christine. “It’s an amazing journey with so much support along the way.”

Inspiring case studies were presented by current award winner Kelly Hylton, and past winners Stacy Johnson and Graheme Fraser, who asserted that modern nursing could learn a lot from Mary Seacole. “Diversity should be integral to the way we work in nursing,” Graheme said. “The six Cs? Mary Seacole was there before it started.”

Speaker Yvonne Coghill, Senior Programme Lead Inclusion at the Leadership Academy, highlighted the growing profile of the awards across the NHS. “These awards are an opportunity to be at the forefront of current changes in nursing and to give something back.”

Applications close on 31 May 2013. For more information visit www.nhsemployers.org/maryseacole
