This event will discuss the new national EWS and supporting training package developed by a pan-professional group.

Monday, 12.45-1.45pm
Nursing routines: Is it time for a hasty return?
RCN Wales Board
ACC, Upper Galleria, Room 12
Professional Knowledge

A drive for greater efficiency in the NHS, combined with an increasing emphasis on providing patients with individualised, dignified, patient-centred care, presents a major challenge for all nurses and health care workers. We look at how health services have been described as ‘wasteful and inefficient medical factories’ (Porter 2002), leading to pressure on nursing staff to deal with an ever-increasing workload more efficiently, and track the parallel development of the movement towards individualised care. How can these two developments be approached together?

Monday, 12.45-1.45pm
Peer led appraisals for nurses: A robust system for underpinning effective revaluation
RCN Advanced Nurse Practitioner Forum
Hilton, Grace 2-3
Positioning of Nurses/Campaigning

During this event delegates will be invited to discuss peer led appraisals for nurses. The speakers have used this approach for nurses practicing at advanced level and the hope is that the same principles will be adapted to all nurses, regardless of their level of practice. The RCN and NMC are exploring how revalidation can best be supported – and the further regulation of advanced practice continues to be considered – so this event is both relevant and timely.

Monday, 12.45-1.45pm
Personality disorder: Update on last year’s Resolution 10
RCN North of Tyne branch
ACC, Upper Galleria, Room 13
Professional Knowledge

Substance abuse, self harm and attempted suicide are prevalent among people with personality disorder, and people with PD frequently attend accident and emergency departments for help, making the issue a key one for nursing staff. Last year, Congress passed a resolution that aimed to raise awareness of personality disorder with members and colleagues and lobby for better resources to support sufferers when accessing care. This event updates on how the work has developed over the year and explores how A&E departments and staff can be better equipped to assess and treat this group of people. With Will Corulla from North of Tyne branch, who has been working with the RCN Mental Health Adviser, Ian Hullat, and Council Members David Miller and Kevin Ball on the project.

Monday, 12.45-1.45pm
Pride in mental health nursing
RCN Mental Health Forum
Jurys Inn, Room 9
Positioning of Nurses/Campaigning

Attend the launch of this short film in which mental health nurses and service users tell their stories. The film has been produced by the mental health forum steering committee, which has begun work with RCN members and the public to develop a better understanding of mental health issues and the role of nurses working in this field. This is the start of what we hope will be wider work, including the development of social networks and other media that will enable the sharing of good practice and the promotion of mental health nursing. This event will illustrate how mental health nurses make a difference in practice, take pride in their role and influence policy. By participating in this event you will be able to shape how this initiative is taken forward through the involvement of more stakeholders and for the benefit of wider audiences.

Monday, 12.45-1.45pm
Quality versus cuts: Can nursing deliver?
RCN Scotland Board
Jurys Inn, Room 3-5
Positioning of Nurses/Campaigning

With the downturn in the economy and health budgets being cut, can nursing maintain and improve quality for patients, with fewer resources? The Scottish Government recently published its quality strategy, which outlines three key quality ambitions (mutually beneficial partnerships; no avoidable injury or harm; and the most appropriate treatments at the right time to everyone who will benefit). This fringe will debate how these ambitions and the priorities of the quality strategy can be delivered across health care settings at both strategic and operational level during the economic downturn. It will cover a range of issues, including the impact of workforce changes and service redesign on quality. Leading this key debate will be Scotland’s CNO, Ros Moore and Nurse Director, Angela Wallace.

Monday, 1-1.30pm

The session will provide you with an opportunity to discuss the evidence behind telephone based care, and discover how it can empower patients to self care. Join us to have your questions answered by pioneers in the field.

Promoting dignity in dementia: Transforming general hospital care
RCN Nursing Department

Professional Knowledge

Improving the quality of dementia care in general hospitals has been identified as a key priority area by the new coalition government. With an estimated 40 per cent of people in hospital with dementia, often with co-morbid conditions and experiencing longer stays, nursing has a key role to play in supporting this agenda. The RCN is currently facilitating a national project supported by the Department of Health, which aims to influence and guide the provision of dementia care in acute care settings. This event will present initial findings of the project, including best practice innovations which have transformed the delivery of dementia care, promoted dignity and improved understanding. It will provide both nurses and health care assistants with an understanding of the key issues and ideas for improving dementia care in these settings. This addresses Council priorities for dementia care as well as highlighting the position of nursing in informing and influencing health care delivery.

Come along and find out how nurses are placed to promote self care and a greater awareness of maintaining excellent health.

Monday, 5.45-6.45pm
The role of policy, education and research in countering adult abuse and vulnerability
RCN Research Society
ACC, Upper Galleria, Room 10
Professional Knowledge

Adults can be vulnerable to abuse and neglect within some health care settings and nurses may support people who have been abused elsewhere. Addressing such abuse should, therefore, be a concern of all nurses. While examples of good practice development and a policy framework exist there remains room for improvement. This seminar will provide presentations highlighting the role that policy, education and research can play in taking forward such an agenda. There will be opportunities for participants to share examples of good practice and also to identify priorities for future development. Recent reviews of policy frameworks in Wales and England and the development of a specific focus on safeguarding adults by the Nursing and Midwifery Council make this seminar timely. In relation to RCN Council priorities it has relevance to nurse leadership, taking forward the research, education and policy agendas as well as addressing issues relating to diversity and human rights.
