Developing the district nursing workforce in the next five years
RCN District Nurses Forum
Hilton, Room 6
Positioning of Nurses/Campaigning

The need for a skilled community nursing workforce is increasing as more people than ever before live with long-term conditions and the number of early hospital discharges rises. Meanwhile, the Government White Paper (England) has set out plans for GP commissioning consortia, emphasising the need for services that serve local populations. But with the number of district nurses falling and a significant proportion due to retire in the next five years, how can we ensure we develop sufficient district nurses for the future? Join this discussion facilitated by an expert panel to have your say, and hear speeches from an educationalist and a commissioner in this area. The event is aimed at district and community nurses working in all four countries of the UK.

The event provides an opportunity to discuss the national and local actions necessary to ensure the health needs of people with learning disabilities are met.

Managing acute faecal incontinence (AFI) in critical care patients in four European countries
Kindly supported by ConvaTec
RCN Critical Care and In-Flight Nursing Forum
Hilton, Grace 1
Professional Knowledge

The management of acute faecal Incontinence (AFI) in the critical care setting has changed rapidly since the introduction of 'bowel management and containment systems' but it is not yet managed in a standardised or evidence-based manner. A survey across four European countries (UK, Spain, Italy and Germany) set out to review the differing management options and to try and identify the reasons for these differences. Infection control, tissue viability and patients’ dignity all need to be taken into account when deciding on a plan of action and these issues are discussed in detail. This seminar reports back those findings and discusses a European observational research study (FIRST) to be conducted throughout 2011 to further inform and advance practice in this very important area.

We’ll consider what’s on offer at the moment, alternative options to the current training, and possible solutions for the future physical management of violence.

Should vulnerable nurses be allowed to care for vulnerable patients?
Nursing Standard
ACC, Upper Galleria, Room 12
Positioning of Nurses/Campaigning

Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, Chief Executive and Registrar Nursing and Midwifery Council and Reverend Professor Stephen Wright, Chairman of the Sacred Space Foundation in public conversation.

Significant numbers of NMC fitness to practise cases involve nurses who have received cautions or convictions for alcohol and drugs related offences. The NMC believes that such nurses are arguably more vulnerable than those patients for whom they care. Correspondents to Nursing Standard have expressed a variety of views ranging from the empathy argument - such nurses may well have insights in common with vulnerable patients - to arguments about the need for more rigorous risk management systems. How should the NMC improve guidance to educators and employers in order to protect the public?

Used in healthcare, it allows the techniques learned from drug medication errors to be applied to the complexities of child protection. It should be used wherever failure would mean harm or injury to the patient. This workshop will be of interest to those who are working in both health and social care settings, especially for those where complex decision making and assessment are crucial.
