Law and medical ethics

Date: 19 April 2010 to 25 June 2010

Location: This course is taken online

The aim of this course is to explore the relationship between the law, ethics and the practice of medicine.

The course focuses on the key areas of consent and refusal of consent, issues around withholding and withdrawing care, medical negligence, and patient confidentiality. A range of other areas central to nursing and medical practice are also covered, including medical research, mental health, and reproduction.

A significant outcome for many past participants has been increased confidence when dealing with patients, and with colleagues, during day-to-day practice and when difficult decisions need to be made.

The law is explained clearly, in non-technical language; legal terms and concepts are defined and explained; and practical examples are included.

The course is accessed via an online learning environment, eScript, designed to be easy to use and extremely reliable. You can log in at any time that suits you, from any internet connected computer.

As well as the core, detailed learning materials, you will find a range of additional links, uploads and references to follow up areas of specific interest.

You will be able to share experiences and participate in online discussion with your tutor, and fellow students. If you are new to this, don't worry - you will be supported as you find your feet. There are also questions for reflection, quizzes, and research-related activities. You can expect to spend around five hours each week, over ten weeks, reading and participating in online activity.

A certificate of attendance is issued on completion of the course, as evidence of learning for your portfolio. The course does not include any assessment of written work or examinations.

Study hours: 50
