Life enrichment facilitator for older people training course: Teaching evidence based exercise to older people

This training course has been closely linked to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) and addresses the need for more suitable and affordable training designed specifically for the needs of health care professionals, carers and volunteers working with older people.  

Much of the course is devoted to providing candidates with up-to-date knowledge, skills and understanding concerning the provision of evidence based exercise advice and guidance to older people with varying health and fitness needs. The course examines the role of exercise in the management of conditions and diseases commonly associated with ageing, and gives an overview of relevant research and government recommendations regarding exercise prescription. Particular attention is paid to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, frequent falls and stroke.

Teaching the course over a period of 15 - 30 weeks (depending on study options and individual requirements) allows time for candidates to practice and develop safe and effective teaching, demonstration and evaluation skills.

Two short optional units are included which enable candidates to explore ways to facilitate the psychological, cognitive, social and spiritual needs of older people.

Finally, the course will provide candidates with a wide range of knowledge, skills and understanding which will underpin high standards and safe provision of service. Topics will include:
