An Introduction to NHS Finance
Big changes in NHS structure and management in recent years have affected NHS finance in a variety of ways. The introduction of patient choice, plurality of service suppliers, Payment by Results and Foundation Trusts are arguably the most significant changes to the NHS in its 50 year history.
As a Nurse Manager or budget holder you face increasing challenges. Not only do you have the responsibility for effectively managing your departmental budget, you will also be required to make some difficult financial decisions that ultimately have
implications for staff and patients. It is crucial, therefore, that you understand the necessary basics of healthcare finance and appreciate the impact of the recent NHS reforms on your role, your organisation and on the future of the NHS.
This comprehensive and practical one-day event will provide you with the opportunity to work with nursing colleagues to increase your understanding of NHS finance and develop the knowledge and awareness to handle key financial issues with confidence.
Through a mix of plenary and workshop sessions, the programme aims to help you to understand:

- How the NHS is financed
- Key funding issues and how funds flow through the NHS
- The impact and development of key issues such as Payment by
